What is the Internet Of Senses? Successor To IoT?

Technology has come a long way with many recent breakthroughs. The previous decade has introduced IoT, AI, AR, VR, and seamless wireless connectivity. The explosion of research and development into the Internet of Things has introduced a plethora of new ideas. It is certain that IoT will change the consumer market in years to come. The Internet of Senses is emerging as the latest technological trend following IoT. The Internet of Senses would take the concept of IoT to a whole new level. Ericsson ConsumerLab predicts that the Internet of Senses (IoS) will soon be one of the hottest consumer trends in the next few years.

What Is The Internet Of Senses?

Ericsson ConsumerLab introduced the concept of the Internet of Senses in their 10 Hot Consumer Trends report. The report expressed the consumers’ expectations of the next generation of connected consumer technology. The report emphasized leveraging the interaction with various senses including smell, vision, taste, touch, and sound for the next generation of consumer products. They claim that consumers expect that the IoS will not only be introduced but will be a hot trending reality by 2030.

The Concept Behind Internet Of Senses

The concept of the Internet of Senses revolves around using the brain as the interface to exchange the cognitive senses with the users. This ingenious concept would blur the line between a physical and a digital experience. Such a piece of technology will be able to take inputs directly from the thoughts and deliver outputs in the form of senses with minimum or no physical effort. IoS would provide the means to eliminate most of the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) devices such as keyboards, mouse, joysticks, or even touch-based user interfaces. Interactions with the senses would definitely rely on advanced Augmented Reality (AR) glasses for visual aid. It will force us to create many breakthroughs based on the new demands that would arise.

Applications Expected Out Of Internet Of Senses:

Consumer electronics applications would benefit the most as the Internet of Senses become a reality. The ability to interact with thoughts and exchange senses would change the way existing products work. Here are a few applications that the Internet of Senses could be serving in the next decade:

  • Users will be able to search routes just by thinking about their destination at a particular time. Users will be able to navigate through those routes with AR glasses interactively.
  • The Internet is primarily used for the search of information, and they will be able to access it easily with the help of the Internet of Senses. IoS-based wearable glasses would be able to receive thoughts and conduct searches for relevant information. Users will be able to see this information on their AR glasses.
  • Text is primarily medium for any communication over the internet and asks for a significant amount of time from the users. Internet of Senses will allow users to write and send short texts or emails just by thinking about the responses.
  • Internet of Senses will further focus on the senses which are not yet familiar to the consumers with the Internet of Things. Such senses include the sense of smell and taste. For example, the future products with the Internet of Senses will allow an exchange of smells and tastes for the food and beverages. Users might also be able to share those senses over social media as well someday.
  • The ability to feel the products in the hands is the best way to gain the confidence of customers. Internet of Sense will enable the users with an immersive feel of the product’s contact, sharpness, and maybe even weight. It might change the e-commerce shopping experience and will provide a real-like experience to the users.

Conclusion

The Internet of Senses is a wild prediction. It’s based on the fast progress observed in technology over the last decade. The fact that this concept seems viable is the acknowledgment of how far technology has come. However, this new way will come with a lot of unidentified challenges. After all, something that communicates with human senses or thoughts must be private, secure, and error-free. The importance of robustness with such a product can not be overlooked. Brain-Computer Gateways are already available. It will not take long for IoS to come into the picture. The world might witness the Internet of Senses in action earlier than expected.
