Motional is revolutionizing autonomous vehicles, pioneering some of the industry’s biggest advances. Their achievements range from conducting the first fully-autonomous cross-country drive in America to launching the world’s first robotaxi pilot and operating one of the largest public robotaxi fleets worldwide with over 100,000 self-driven rides.

Driverless Technology

Now, the first driverless vehicles are being tested out, with estimates that by 2025 a full third of cars will be automated. Autonomous technology promises to improve road safety, reduce congestion and give those who cannot drive a new lease on life.

Despite all of the advances, self-driving systems still face many obstacles. A major one is determining how to react when faced with unexpected obstacles or changes in their environment, such as traffic lights or pedestrians. To address this problem, several companies are developing solutions for driverless technology to better handle these scenarios.

Driverless vehicles must be able to make instantaneous decisions about when it is best to slow down, swerve or accelerate normally. To accomplish this, real-time processing of multiple types of data from sensors such as lidar and radar, camera/video systems, GPS positioning systems and more is needed.

Motional, a joint venture of Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv, is an industry leader in developing advanced autonomous driverless technology. It’s been responsible for some major breakthroughs such as the first fully autonomous cross-country drive in America and operation of the world’s first robotaxi pilot.

To meet the most stringent standards, the company voluntarily exposed its self-driving technology to millions of miles and a two-year safety evaluation process led by TUV SUD, an international technical service provider. Once complete, they received an unprecedented endorsement from Nevada: its first endorsement ever!

Over two years, hundreds of employees dedicated over 100,000 hours to developing this technology. They covered 1.5 million miles driving across various road environments, cities, and vehicle platforms.

Following an exhaustive safety review, the company’s self-driving technology was given the highest accolade: endorsement from Nevada to operate without a driver aboard. Lyft and Uber have played major roles in making driverless technology a reality through their ride hailing networks that offer mass adoption opportunities.

It’s no secret that the robotaxi industry faces numerous difficulties, from user acceptance to infrastructure issues. Companies are working diligently to solve those issues now in order to bring their technology onto the market later this year.

Autonomous Vehicles

Motional, a Hyundai-Aptiv joint venture that seeks to commercialize autonomous vehicles, has joined forces with Derq Inc to test how a camera above an intersection can provide a bird’s eye view of traffic conditions that will help autonomous cars navigate more safely. Through this collaboration, Motional and Derq plan to test how such technology could make roads safer and enhance perception for self-driving cars.

For instance, Derq technology can alert a driver if another car is driving too quickly and blocking their path, alerting them to slow down or stop in order to prevent an accident. Furthermore, it offers an aerial view of the intersection and surrounding traffic so drivers have a better idea of how close they are to cars or pedestrians.

Robotaxis

Motional uses data from various sources to train its AI systems, which then use machine learning and neural networks to learn patterns in the environment and adapt accordingly – such as when roads are shut down or flooded. Through this combination of machine learning and neural networks, Motional’s AI is capable of adapting and adapting to new conditions like road closures or floods.

Motional has built-in software that detects road hazards such as puddles or potholes and immediately redirects the vehicle to an alternate route. Furthermore, it’s capable of monitoring braking and steering behavior so it can quickly correct any issues that arise.

Furthermore, AI can monitor and manage traffic patterns in real time to help guide IONIQ 5 robotaxis to the safest route. This could be especially advantageous when traveling through dense urban areas with multiple pedestrians and double-parked cars.

The AI can even communicate with other autonomous vehicles on the same route or people using public transit systems. This could mean that if one of the IONIQ 5 robotaxis encounters an accident or fire, a remote Motional operator could instantly direct it to safety.
