Ikea Smart Hub Dirigera Supports Matter

Swedish furniture and home accessories retailer Ikea has unveiled a smart hub that supports Matter, an open standard for smart home automation that’s being adopted by major players such as Apple, Google, and Samsung.

Ikea Home smart app, designed to bring digital solutions into everyday life at home, is also compatible with this router. Available for both iOS and Android devices, this app helps you manage all of your home automation needs.

Features

Are you searching for a way to upgrade your smart home devices? Ikea new smart hub Dirigera may be just what you need. This device boasts several new features such as Wi-Fi, Thread and Zigbee radios along with support for Matter, the new standard developed by Amazon, Apple and Google.

The hub is also a Thread border router, meaning it can connect other Thread-enabled devices to the internet without using an ethernet cable. Furthermore, it’s capable of acting as a Matter gateway – compatible with other smart homes that utilize this standard protocol.

Aside from its superior technology, the DIRIGERA also boasts a sleeker and more modern appearance than its predecessor. It’s significantly slimmer than the older Tradfri gateway, making it perfect for minimalist home designs. Furthermore, this device features both an ethernet port and USB-C jack for power input.

On the inside, the Dirigera features are an upgrade over the TRADFRI, boasting an updated software system that can support more product categories and onboard more devices. Plus, it works together with an improved IKEA Home app designed for ease of setup – perfect for setting up your entire smart home!

You can control the DIRIGERA with the app, creating “scenes” to make it simpler to trigger specific actions from within the device itself. Each scene consists of multiple interactions that you can configure for a certain result – such as turning on a light or shutting down air conditioning.

The app itself has been improved to feature an intuitive dashboard with rooms represented as squares in your choice of colours. Each square can be tapped to reveal interactive icons that allow you to control any connected devices.

The app also allows you to divide all of your smart devices into individual rooms, so they don’t mix up with one another. This is an invaluable feature for those who have multiple smart bulbs or other gadgets in their home that need grouping together due to similar color scheme or functionality.

Connectivity

The Smarthub Dirigera is Ikea next attempt at creating a home automation ecosystem that rivals Google Home and Amazon Alexa. It offers more connectivity options than its aging Tradfri gateway, including Zigbee, Thread radios and Wi-Fi. Plus, it supports Matter – the new smart home standard adopted by Apple, Amazon and Google among others.

The hub will integrate with a range of IKEA smart products, such as lights and speakers, an air purifier, window blinds and more. Furthermore, it supports Apple HomeKit which enables devices to be controlled via Siri or the IKEA Home app.

DIRIGERA will feature Wi-Fi, Thread and Zigbee radios as well as an Ethernet port for wired internet connections. Additionally, it has a USB-C port which will be powered by its included USB-C power adapter.

IKEA announced the launch of its smarthub, which will work with both its own products as well as those from Amazon, Apple, Google and Samsung. Furthermore, it supports a redesigned home app for easier usage.

According to the Swedish furniture maker, the Dirigera smart product gateway will support more categories than Tradfri currently handles and be compatible with various operating systems. Furthermore, it features an enhanced onboarding experience as well as personalized customization features like scenes and pre-set functions tailored specifically towards smart products.

The new hub will also support the Matter standard, an open-source protocol developed by a consortium including Apple, Amazon and Google. This will enable users to connect and control their smart devices from a central hub, eliminating the need to manage multiple apps or devices separately.

In addition to Matter support, the DIRIGERA will come with an updated app that Ikea describes as “user friendly.” The upgraded application enables users to control their devices individually or collectively via voice controls, shortcut buttons and motion sensors.

Apps

IKEA is taking its decades-long life at home expertise and making it digital, bringing smart home technology to everyone. Recently, they announced the release of a new smart hub called Dirigera as well as an app that homeowners can use to set it up and control their devices.

The new smart hub offers an improved onboarding experience and customization options that make it simpler to use. It adheres to the Matter open-source standard supported by Amazon, Apple, and Google and is compatible with Ikea’s entire smart product lineup.

Furthermore, the Dirigera comes equipped with Thread radios and Wi-Fi – an upgrade over Ikea’s Tradfri gateway’s Zigbee radios. This should make onboarding the hub much simpler if you’re upgrading from Tradfri, which serves as the primary way to connect to Ikea’s lights, speakers, blinds, and air purifiers.

Ikea has been selling their Tradfri Gateway since 2014, but the company reports that users wanted a simpler hub that could integrate with other smart home ecosystems. That is why Ikea opted for the more adaptable Dirigera hub instead.

Ikea Home smart app will come pre-loaded, making it “convenient, straightforward and user-friendly” for those interested in a smart home setup. Furthermore, the company plans to introduce remote “away from home” functionality during the first half of 2023.

Starting October 2022, the new smart hub from Ikea is available for sale and work with all their smart device line of lighting, speakers, blinds and air purifiers. Furthermore, Dirigera can handle more product segments than Tradfri does while offering a smoother onboarding process and personalization options that make setting up your smart home simpler for anyone.

Cost

Ikea is finally introducing their new smart hub, Dirigera. This replacement for Tradfri gateway supports integrations with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa devices.

The new Dirigera is significantly smaller and sleeker than its predecessor, yet still supports Zigbee and Wi-Fi radios. Interestingly, it also includes an ethernet port as well as USB-C ports for power.

Though the Tradfri was bulky, it played an essential role in Ikea’s smart home initiative. It was created to make their products simpler to use and set up.

Ikea is taking their smart home concept to the next level with their latest release of Dirigera, a smart hub featuring Wi-Fi, Zigbee and Thread radios that can support Matter’s standard for smart home functionality.

In addition to the Matter protocol, Dirigera features an ethernet port and USB-C jack. It’s slightly slimmer than Tradfri Gateway and features an LED light on top for status indication.

One major advantage of the Dirigera over its older Tradfri gateway rival is that it supports Google HomeKit and Apple HomeKit, enabling you to create cross-platform scenes with your Sonos speakers if you have a Sonos Play:5 or other S1-compatible model. This is great news if you own one of these speakers!

This week, Dirigera became available in North America and Europe with a redesigned Home app. Priced at about $60, this is approximately double the cost of Tradfri Gateway at about $30.

Though the price of the Dirigera may seem high, it’s an indication that Ikea is actively pushing this technology forward. This move could herald a new era of collaboration and communication among smart home products which will truly make your house feel smarter instead of more complex.

Ikea is taking a step in the right direction with their move, demonstrating their desire to become more creative with how we interact with our homes. That’s why they’re introducing features such as automated scenes and moments.
